Murals and signwriting

A wall is the biggest piece of paper you will ever be given. I paint hand lettered murals and traditional signwriting for homes, schools, cafes, salons and offices, working straight onto the surface in specialist paints so the finish belongs to the building rather than sitting on top of it.

Where hand painted lettering works

• Schools and nurseries with values, mottos and reading corners that children actually stop to read

How a mural is planned

I visit or ask for photographs and measurements, then draw a scale layout so you can see exactly how the lettering will sit on the wall before a brush is lifted. Once the design is signed off, the wall is prepared, the layout is drawn out by hand and the lettering is painted in acrylics or specialist sign paint.

Most rooms take one to three days on site. I work around opening hours and term times where I can, and everything is left clean and finished at the end of each day. If you are at the thinking stage, the journal has five things worth deciding before you commission a mural.

Seasonal and window lettering

Shop windows are the other surface I letter regularly: seasonal displays, one off promotions and whole shopfront schemes, painted by hand and on site around your opening hours. The busiest of them by a long way is hand painted Christmas windows, which has a page of its own because the dates fill from early autumn.

Materials and longevity

Interior murals are painted in high quality acrylics and sealed where the wall takes knocks, such as corridors and play areas. Painted lettering lasts for years and can be touched up rather than replaced.

On site work is centred on Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire, and I travel further for larger commissions.
